Report on the Organic Monitoring Program of Baden-Württemberg
Introduction
The so-called organic monitoring came to life as a result of an overall concept of promotion and consultation on organic farming, as decided by the government of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg on 16 October, 2001. Such a profound monitoring program exists only in Baden-Württemberg. It is unique within Germany, and no comparable surveillance programs are known to exist in Europe.
The aims of the organic monitoring are:
- Collection of data regarding residues and contaminants in organic products (e.g.: pesticides, veterinary drugs, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, etc).
- Comparison of organic foods produced locally and in foreign countries
- Detection and reporting of possible consumer fraud due to false organic labeling
